Skyros

The capital of Skyros lies at the foot of the castle hill. The area of ​​the castle has always been inhabited since antiquity. The white, cubic houses glued together formed a kind of wall that shielded the inhabitants from the fury of the north and the conquerors.
It is worth walking the narrow streets with the shops and the wood-carving and furniture workshops and – even better – admiring the interior of a Skyrian house with the fine art of carved furniture. A unique experience is the Carnivals in Skyros where they bring to life customs that have their roots in the Dionysian cult.
On the last Sunday of Carnival, the streets of Chorio are filled by the Elders and the Corals reviving an old Scythian custom. Finally, don’t miss the July and August events at the Chora’s open air theater.
There are many festivals, most notably that of Saint Hermolas on 25 July, 27 July of Saint Panteleimon, 2 September of Saint Mamas and Panagia of Libyanus on 8 September.
For swimming you can go to the beaches of Molos and Magazia – considered one of the best on the island – to Kira Panagia and Atsitsa – a beautiful pine-covered area with many small harbors where you can enjoy the solitude and tranquility – Kalamitsa and Pefkos. , a picturesque bay with sandy beaches and tavernas – you can reach on foot, by car or by boat from Chora.
