The port and capital of the island is a relatively modern small town, dominated by the imposing church of Our Lady of Evangelistria. On the uphill road leading to it you will find shops with folk art, candles, icons and tombs.
Worth a visit, the church of the Taxiarches, with a carved iconostasis of the 17th century. and marble bell tower, the two temples of Saint Nicholas – the Orthodox and the Catholic – the Catholic monastery of San Antonio (1743) in the district of Pallada, the monastery of the Holy Trinity, which during the Turkish occupation functioned as a secret school of art and the sundials. Also, the Archaeological Museum, the Folklore Museum, the marble outdoor theater, in the village of Volax and the windmill of Varvani (one of the two operating on the island).
For swimming you have to go out to Chora, to Stavros, Agios Markos, Agios Fokas, Pachia Ammos and Agios Sostis, with the wonderful sandy beaches.
One of the most beautiful and fast-growing beaches on the island is located on the bay of Agios Ioannis Porto, with restaurants, taverns, hotels, tennis courts and mini golf.
You will enjoy great local cuisine in picturesque taverns in and around the city and enjoy bars and shops with live music.
There is a big pilgrimage to the church of Panagia on March 25 and August 15, when events mark the anniversary of the torpedoing of the submarine “Elli”. In summer, cultural and sporting events are organized.
