Modern city with about 11,000 inhabitants, 35 km south of Agios Nikolaos. It is built on the site of ancient Ierapytna, one of the most important cities in Crete.
To the south of the ancient harbor lies the fortress Kale, built by the Venetians in the early 13th century. and in the old quarter of the city the mosque, built in the late 19th century, and the Turkish fountain.
