Nafplion

The first capital of modern Greece and today’s capital of the prefecture of Argolida is one of the most tourist areas of Greece. It is 147 km from Athens, from the old Corinth – Nafplio Highway and 160 km from the new Corinth – Tripoli Highway, bypass to Nafplio via Argos.
Nafplio will charm you with its sights. Visit the War Museum founded by I. Kapodistrias, the Archaeological Museum (1713) and the Museum of the Peloponnesian Folklore Foundation B. Papantoniou, which has been awarded as the first and most comprehensive folklore museum in Europe. Also, at Akronafplia, Bourtzi, where the third Venetian castle of the city was built and the first prison of Theodore Kolokotronis, the church of Agios Spyridon (18th century), where Ioannis Kapodistrios I was killed. (16th century) with a copy of Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper”, the Catholic Church of the Transfiguration and the churches of St. Nicholas (1713) and the Birth of the Virgin.
You will also see The Lion at Providence Square (Siegel’s work commissioned by Otto, where the National Assembly convened in 1832 and ratified Otto’s election as King of the Greeks).
In Syntagma Square you will see the home of Regent Armansburg, the Ministry of Military Affairs, the first Greek Gymnasium, the Hellenic Army School where the War Museum is housed, the old Town Hall where the Municipal Art Gallery is housed, the First House of the House Three Naurarchs on the waterfront, the Gate of the Land with the waterfall and the statue of Captain Staikos Staikopoulos, the Municipal Park with the bronze statue of Theodore Kolokotronis. Here is the house of Kolokotronis and Angelos Terzakis, as well as the prisons of Leonardo.
It is also worth visiting the well-preserved Venetian fortress Palamidi, at the top of the homonymous hill climbing 999 steps or by car from the paved road.
Palamidi was created by the French La Sal on behalf of the Venetians in 1685. At its top are the chapel of St. Andrew and the cell of the prison of Th. Kolokotronis, where it was transferred after Bourtzi. At the edge of the hill are the remains of seven fortresses, six with the names of ancient warriors: Themistocles – Miltiades – Achilles – Fokion – Epaminondas – Leonidas.
Nafplio, the city of painters, sculptors and poets, such as Fotis Kontoglou, Angelos Terzakis, Nikos Karouzos, etc., hosts a variety of cultural events throughout the year. The most important are the September Music Meeting, the Anniversary Carnival and the Cultural and Musical August.
